Which audio files does a CDJ actually load?
Formats · 3 min read
Every Pioneer DJ and AlphaTheta player we checked, from the CDJ-900NXS (2013) to the CDJ-3000X (2025), plays MP3, AAC, WAV and AIFF, and lists 24-bit WAV and AIFF. So when a 24-bit file will not load, bit depth alone is the least likely cause: the sample rate, the format, the USB stick, the firmware or the file's header come first.
Everything here is read from the manufacturers' manuals and firmware histories. We own none of these decks; nothing was tested on one.
What each model reads
In the manuals of every Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta model, MP3 and AAC stop at 16 bit and 48 kHz. Sample rates are a list, not a range: five models take only 44.1 and 48 kHz, four add 88.2 and 96 kHz, and none plays 192 kHz from a stick. Firmware has added formats and file systems, never a bit depth or a sample rate.
The USB stick comes first
A stick the deck cannot mount fails before any file is read, and looks like a file that will not load. NTFS, the usual Windows format, works on none of these players; FAT32 and HFS+ work on all of them. exFAT depends on model and firmware, and the rekordbox release notes disagree with the manuals about where.
No rekordbox export is needed: every player here browses plain folders, as the CDJ-3000 manual describes.
Why a 24-bit file sometimes fails
| Documented cause | Is bit depth the problem? |
|---|---|
| sample rate above the model's ceiling | no, but hi-res files are usually 24-bit too |
| FLAC or ALAC on a model without it | no |
| a disc instead of USB (CDJ-2000NXS2) | no |
| 32-bit float, which no Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta table lists | a different depth |
| exFAT or NTFS stick | no, the whole drive fails |
| a file the firmware does not parse | sometimes |
The last row fits "some 24-bit files load and others do not". Firmware updates fix it vaguely, "Some WAV files couldn't be played" in the CDJ-3000 firmware history; one 2015 CDJ-2000NXS entry names a WAVE file "whose header is incompatible", without saying which header.
One header is the likely suspect. ffmpeg and tools built on it write every 24-bit WAV with a longer header, WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE, and DJs report that Pioneer players refuse it (see Sources). No Pioneer DJ or AlphaTheta document says so, and we could not test it.
If a 24-bit WAV fails on a deck that lists it, re-export it with a plain header, or as 16-bit (from ffmpeg, that changes the header too).
What this does not tell you
- What any deck actually does. Manuals lag behind firmware, and "some WAV files" does not say which.
- Whether the extensible header is the cause. DJs report it; we showed what ffmpeg writes, not what a deck does with it. Not settled.
- Which firmware a club deck runs. A CDJ-3000 on 2020 firmware has neither exFAT nor the ver. 2.00 WAV fix.
How we checked, model by model, with every table
Method. Sources: the current official operating instructions for nine AlphaTheta / Pioneer DJ models, each model's official firmware change history, the rekordbox release notes and FAQ, and the Denon DJ SC6000 user guide v4.3.0 for contrast. Every number in the tables is read from those documents. Where two official documents disagree, both are shown. Not tested on hardware. We own none of these players. Everything below is what the manufacturers document, not what we observed on a deck. One structural test of our own: what header a 24-bit WAV actually carries. We encoded a 1 s sine with ffmpeg 6.1.1 at 16, 24 and 32-bit float and at 44.1, 48 and 96 kHz (7 files), plus one 24-bit control file written by Python's standard wave module, and read the fmt chunk of each file back byte by byte. Script: content-social/drafts/scripts/I3_wav_headers.py. No audio metric is measured.
Formats, per manual. Lossless formats (WAV, AIFF, ALAC, FLAC) carry 16 or 24 bit on every Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta model below. MP3 and AAC are 16 bit, up to 48 kHz, on all of them.
| Model (manual) | MP3 | AAC | WAV | AIFF | FLAC | ALAC | Lossless: max bit depth | Lossless: max sample rate |

Notes on the table:
- Sample rates are a list, not a range. In the manuals, the 48 kHz models accept exactly 44.1 and 48 kHz for lossless files; the 96 kHz models accept 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz. A 32 kHz or 192 kHz WAV is outside every Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta table here.
- The CDJ-2000NXS2 has a disc exception. Its manual (DRI1290-A): "WAV (88.2 kHz, 96 kHz), AIFF (88.2 kHz, 96 kHz), Apple Lossless and FLAC files on discs cannot be played." From USB and SD they play.
- The CDJ-3000 in Performance mode is a different player. When it is driven by rekordbox on a computer, rekordbox decodes the file, so rekordbox's format list applies: AlphaTheta's help center states that "192 kHz high-resolution music files can play only in Performance mode". Everything in the table is Export mode, the deck reading a USB stick or SD card on its own.
- AAC stops at 48 kHz even on the 96 kHz models. The rekordbox FAQ's per-model table marks AAC as not playable at 88.2/96 kHz on the CDJ-3000X, CDJ-3000, CDJ-2000NXS2 and OPUS-QUAD, consistent with the manuals.
- The XDJ-XZ gained FLAC by firmware. XDJ-XZ firmware ver. 1.10 (10 March 2020): "FLAC file playback is now supported", at "44.1 and 48 kHz sampling rates [...] 16-bit and 24-bit resolution" per the announcement. Neither the XDJ-XZ nor the XDJ-RX3 manual mentions ALAC, and the rekordbox FAQ marks ALAC as not playable on both.
- Denon states its limits differently. The SC6000 guide gives "WAV (44.1-192 kHz, 16-32-bit)" and the same for AIFF, and lists FLAC and ALAC with no bit depth or rate at all. Whether "32-bit" includes floating point is not stated.
No firmware for any of the nine Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta models adds a bit depth or a sample rate. The CDJ-900NXS (latest ver. 1.31), CDJ-2000NXS (ver. 1.44) and CDJ-2000NXS2 (ver. 1.87) end their lives with the format list their manual launched with.
USB file systems. A stick the deck cannot mount fails before any file is looked at, which can look like "this file will not load" when it is really "this drive will not read".

- exFAT arrived on the CDJ-3000 without the CDJ-3000's own documents saying so. The rekordbox 6.6.2 release notes (29 March 2022): "Support for exFAT formatted USB storage devices and SD cards. The following DJ equipment support exFAT: CDJ-3000 (ver. 1.20 or later) / XDJ-XZ (ver. 1.23 or later) / XDJ-RX3 (ver. 1.11 or later)". The CDJ-3000 manual is still revision A and lists "FAT16, FAT32, HFS+", and the CDJ-3000 firmware history entry for ver. 1.20 (30 September 2021) does not mention exFAT.
- The XDJ-XZ is contradictory. The same release notes say exFAT from ver. 1.23, but the current XDJ-XZ manual (DRI1625-B) says "NTFS and exFAT aren't supported", and the XDJ-XZ firmware history for ver. 1.23 (1 March 2022) mentions improved HFS+ reading, not exFAT.
- NTFS is unsupported on every Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta model here, the usual case for a drive formatted on Windows. The Denon SC6000 guide does not list NTFS either. (The older SC5000 guide v1.5 listed NTFS and HFS+ as read-only; that never carried over to the SC6000.)
- Only the first partition counts on the CDJ-2000NXS and CDJ-2000NXS2, per their manuals: "If multiple partitions are set on the USB device, only the first partition can be used", unless another partition holds the rekordbox library.
rekordbox export, or just folders. None of these players needs a rekordbox export to play a file. The CDJ-3000 manual: "If you browse a storage device (SD, USB) that does not contain a rekordbox library on the BROWSE screen, the folder and track lists are displayed in a hierarchical structure". The XDJ-1000MK2, XDJ-XZ, XDJ-RX3 and OPUS-QUAD manuals carry the same statement. Per its guide, the SC6000 has a "Folder" view and analyses unprepared tracks when they are loaded.
What the export adds is the analysis (beat grid, waveform, cues) and the library views; the OPUS-QUAD manual marks some functions as "only available when browsing the rekordbox library". The export does not widen the format list: the deck still decodes the file itself, and the table above still applies. The one documented exception is the CDJ-3000 Performance mode above, where the computer decodes.
Why a 24-bit file can fail, per model. If the model's manual lists 24-bit WAV (every one above does), these are the documented reasons a 24-bit file can still be refused, roughly in the order they are worth checking.
| Cause | Which models, per the documents | 24-bit specific? |
|---|---|---|
| Sample rate above the ceiling (88.2/96 kHz on a 48 kHz model; anything at 192 kHz in Export mode) | CDJ-900NXS, CDJ-2000NXS, XDJ-1000MK2, XDJ-XZ, XDJ-RX3 stop at 48 kHz; the 96 kHz models stop at 96 kHz | no, but hi-res files are usually 24-bit, so the two travel together |
| Format the model never had (FLAC, ALAC) | FLAC and ALAC on CDJ-900NXS and CDJ-2000NXS; ALAC on XDJ-XZ and XDJ-RX3; FLAC on XDJ-XZ before firmware 1.10 | no |
| Disc instead of USB | CDJ-2000NXS2: 88.2/96 kHz WAV and AIFF, ALAC and FLAC not from discs | no |
| 32-bit float | no Pioneer DJ / AlphaTheta table lists a 32-bit WAV | it is a different depth, often mislabelled "24-bit or higher" by export dialogs |
| File system | exFAT on CDJ-2000NXS2, XDJ-1000MK2, older CDJ-3000 firmware; NTFS everywhere | no, the whole drive is unreadable |
| A file the firmware does not parse | see the firmware entries below | sometimes |
The last row is the one that matches "some 24-bit files fail and others do not". The firmware histories record it several times, always in general terms:
- CDJ-2000NXS ver. 1.23 (17 February 2015): "Fixed an issue where a WAVE file, whose header is incompatible, cannot be loaded to a deck, but the [Loading..] sign is shown continuously."
- CDJ-2000NXS ver. 1.25 (15 December 2015): "Playback of an AIFF music file (24bit/48kHz) stopped and tracks could not be loaded to a deck." The CDJ-900NXS got the same fix in ver. 1.30 (24 November 2016).
- CDJ-3000 ver. 2.00 (30 November 2021): "Some WAV files couldn't be played."
- XDJ-XZ ver. 1.23 (1 March 2022): "Some WAV files couldn't be played."
- XDJ-1000MK2 ver. 1.42 (4 February 2020) and CDJ-2000NXS2 ver. 1.85 (4 February 2020): "Unable to play some Apple Lossless files."
Only the first entry names a cause, and only as "whose header is incompatible". None says which header.
What "a 24-bit WAV" can mean inside the file. A WAV file opens with a fmt chunk whose first field is a format tag. There are two common ways to say "plain PCM": the tag 0x0001 (WAVE_FORMAT_PCM, a 16-byte chunk) and the tag 0xFFFE (WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE, a 40-byte chunk whose real format sits in a SubFormat field further in). Microsoft's own documentation says the plain form "is sufficient for describing formats with sample sizes of 8 or 16 bits, but WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE is necessary to adequately describe formats with a sample precision of greater than 16 bits". Tools that follow that advice write every 24-bit file the extensible way.
We checked what ffmpeg does:
| Writer | Bit depth | Sample rate | Format tag | fmt length |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ffmpeg 6.1.1 | 16 | 44.1 kHz | 0x0001 WAVE_FORMAT_PCM | 16 |
| ffmpeg 6.1.1 | 16 | 48 kHz | 0x0001 WAVE_FORMAT_PCM | 16 |
| ffmpeg 6.1.1 | 16 | 96 kHz | 0xFFFE WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE | 40 |
| ffmpeg 6.1.1 | 24 | 44.1 kHz | 0xFFFE WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE | 40 |
| ffmpeg 6.1.1 | 24 | 48 kHz | 0xFFFE WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE | 40 |
| ffmpeg 6.1.1 | 24 | 96 kHz | 0xFFFE WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE | 40 |
| ffmpeg 6.1.1 | 32 float | 44.1 kHz | 0xFFFE WAVE_FORMAT_EXTENSIBLE | 40 |
Python wave (control) |
24 | 44.1 kHz | 0x0001 WAVE_FORMAT_PCM | 16 |
ffmpeg's rule is in its source: the extensible tag is written when the sample rate is above 48 kHz or when the codec has more than 16 bits per sample. So from ffmpeg, and from any tool built on it, a 16-bit and a 24-bit WAV at 44.1 kHz differ in two ways, not one: the sample width and the header layout. The control row shows the header is the writer's choice; 24-bit does not force it.
DJs report that Pioneer players refuse the extensible tag at supported bit depths, and that rewriting it to 0x0001 makes the same samples load (see also, at the end of Sources). No Pioneer DJ or AlphaTheta document we found says whether its players accept it, and we could not test it. So it is the likely suspect, not a finding: if a 24-bit WAV fails on a deck whose manual lists 24-bit WAV, the header is one of two variables, and a fair test changes one at a time (the same 24-bit samples with a plain header, then a 16-bit file).
More limits.
- Other models. The original CDJ-2000 and CDJ-900, the CDJ-850, CDJ-350, XDJ-700, CDJ-1500X, XDJ-AZ, OMNIS-DUO, CDJ-TOUR1 and other Denon players were not read line by line. The rekordbox FAQ groups several of them, but we did not read their manuals.
- The one header a firmware note names. The CDJ-2000NXS ver. 1.23 note shows a header can block loading on that model; it does not say it was the extensible header, and it was fixed in 2015.
- Laptop setups. When rekordbox, Serato or Traktor decodes on a computer (including the CDJ-3000's Performance mode), the computer's format list applies, not the deck's.
- Sound. Whether 24-bit sounds different from 16-bit on a club system is a separate question.
